Introduction: What is Hurricane Milton?

Hurricane Milton is a rapidly intensifying storm currently sweeping through the Gulf of Mexico. It has already reached Category 5, making it one of the most dangerous storms of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Florida’s Gulf Coast is in its projected path, and with the state still recovering from the recent Hurricane Helene, Milton is set to bring life-threatening storm surges, heavy rainfall, and widespread flooding.

1. The Formation of Hurricane Milton

Milton began as a tropical disturbance in the western Caribbean Sea, becoming the 13th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. On September 26, meteorologists detected a low-pressure system, which was generating thunderstorms. This disturbance later interacted with remnants of Tropical Depression Eleven-E from the Eastern Pacific and a stationary front in the Bay of Campeche, which helped it grow more organized. By October 4, it had shown enough development for the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to start tracking it closely.

On October 5, the system was upgraded to Tropical Depression Fourteen, and just a few hours later, as wind speeds picked up, it became Tropical Storm Milton. By the afternoon of October 6, the storm intensified into a hurricane, with data from Hurricane Hunters confirming hurricane-force winds.

2. Rapid Intensification into a Major Hurricane

Milton rapidly gained strength on October 7, reaching Category 2 status early in the day with a small, ragged eye forming at its center. By mid-morning, Milton intensified further into a major hurricane, with winds reaching 150 mph (241 km/h) and a central pressure of 940 millibars.

By 3 p.m. UTC, Milton’s wind speeds increased to 155 mph (250 km/h). Within the next hour, it reached Category 5, with sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) and a central pressure of 925 millibars. The storm continued to grow stronger, eventually reaching peak winds of 180 mph (285 km/h) and a pressure of 905 millibars, making it one of the most intense Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded.

3. Areas at Risk and Expected Impact

Milton is predicted to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast, placing millions of people in harm’s way. Evacuation orders have been issued in several areas along Florida’s west coast, as the state is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Helene just two weeks ago.

The National Hurricane Center has warned of dangerous storm surges and severe flooding, particularly in the Tampa Bay area. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency, and President Joe Biden has authorized federal disaster assistance through FEMA. About 15 million people are under flood watches, and 11 million face the possibility of tornadoes.

4. When Will Hurricane Milton Weaken?

Although Milton is currently at its peak strength, meteorologists expect it to weaken slightly before it reaches Florida. By Wednesday evening, when it makes landfall on the Gulf Coast, it’s projected to be a strong Category 3 hurricane. As it moves over cooler waters and onto land, Milton will continue to weaken, but it will still bring heavy rain, storm surges, and a risk of tornadoes across the Southeastern U.S. for the remainder of the week.
