Giuffre’s legal efforts were relentless. In 2015, she filed a defamation lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell after Maxwell publicly called her a liar. Court documents from the lawsuit, later unsealed, revealed disturbing details about Epstein’s operations and the complicity of his associates.
Her most publicized legal battle came in 2021, when she sued Prince Andrew for sexual assault, alleging he abused her three times when she was a teenager. Prince Andrew denied the allegations, famously claiming he had never met Giuffre and questioning the authenticity of the 2001 photograph. She was hospitalized, and in a now-deleted Instagram post, she claimed she had been diagnosed with kidney failure and given just four days to live. Her publicist later clarified that the post was meant for a private Facebook page and that Giuffre was discharged from the hospital on April 7. She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking.” They added, “In the end, the toll of abuse is so heavy that it became unbearable for Virginia to handle its weight.”
Her death sent shockwaves through the survivor community and beyond. Her publicist, Dini von Mueffling, described her as “deeply loving, wise, and funny,” while her lawyer, Sigrid McCawley, called her courage “awe-inspiring.” Tributes poured in, with many noting how Giuffre’s bravery gave other victims the strength to speak out. Her brother, Danny Wilson, shared a final photo of her on Facebook, a poignant reminder of the sister he lost.
